Never Do This One Thing if You Want to Build a Genuine List
One of the best ways to grow your business and pull in your preferred clients is list building. When done correctly, it gives you an opportunity to cultivate relationships with your prospects and develop a loyal community of clients.
If you build your list properly, you also end up with a genuine community of raving fans who pass the word to others looking for your products or services. Unfortunately, most people build their list in the wrong way and end up with a large list of people who would never use their services or buy their products.
In haste to grow a list of subscribers quickly, many entrepreneurs will automatically add someone they have just met to their Ezine. There is one fundamental problem with adding people to a list who haven’t requested it. You will almost always lose them as a client. Here is why.
Think back to a time when someone you just met shoved a business card in your hand. You didn’t ask for it and it probably ended up in the waste paper basket because they had no relationship with you. Adding someone to your list that hasn’t requested it or doesn’t have a need, is just like getting that unwelcomed business card. Each time they receive an unsolicited email from you, it becomes a source of irritation rather than a resource.
The solution? Create an opt-in only process where the prospect is taking the action to be included. Remember to create an attractive offer they can’t refuse in exchange for their contact information. Your offer might include an Ebook or weekly tips that provide amazing shortcuts or in some way makes their life easier. When they choose to opt in to receive your information and you provide continuous value, they look forward to receiving your emails.
Providing beneficial content helps to establish your credibility, create trust, and positions you as a subject matter expert. Over time, you will grow a community of interested readers who will genuinely want to do business with you. When they are ready to utilize your services or products, you are top of mind.
