While most business courses focus on educating entrepreneurs for all the “external” challenges they’ll face, such as market strategy, product rollouts, and team recruiting, very little attention is paid to the internal quandaries you face when operating a business.
However, much like sports, what separates champions from the others is the ability to master your inner entrepreneur. Everyone has doubts or fears which can stop you. The idea is to pivot out of those self-limiting thoughts that stop your actions creating a new self-fulling habit.
You may have discovered that you developed a self-limiting habit of saying statements that you would never say to anyone else, but you say them to yourself about yourself. It can be really subtle, like when you frequently say, “I’m not clear,” “nobody listens to me,” or “what else can happen.” These negative or self-limiting messages create your world and bring about more opportunities of that which you are stating, in this case, more opportunities for not being clear, not being heard, or obstacles.
Setting Up Self-Fulfilling Mindsets Systems
There is good news. You can shift from limiting self-talk in any moment by creating a new habit. The first step is to integrate a new mindset system and messaging into your daily routine.
If you have a morning routine, like getting on a treadmill or engaging in your daily yoga, use that as an opportunity to shift your messaging. Instead of “I’m not clear” start with: “My vision gets clearer every day.” Instead of “Nobody listens to me” say “I am articulate and people listen”. Instead of “what else can happen” say “I invite exciting and positive opportunities into my life.”
And, it doesn’t stop there. In any moment where you repeat a negative or self-limiting notion, stop, mentally and verbally delete it, reframe it, and rephrase it.
Carry It Through Into Your Company’s Culture
As a leader, when you practice your own positive mindset system, it puts a level of integrity when you integrate the practice of focusing on the reframed possibilities into your company’s culture. If you hear nothing but bad news at every meeting, it’s time to start each meeting with positive affirmations or intentions. Make sure your first agenda item invites your team to share what they have accomplished to move their goals forward and set an intention for how the day will go.
By consistently engaging in these mindset systems, notice what begins to transform. And, if you’ve gotten out of the habit of setting your intentions and declaring what you want to have happen, it might be a good time to get back on track. Don’t you think?
Entrepreneurship is an inner game. Master the inner game, watch the outer game transform.
