What is the future you’re living into?
“I’ve always wanted to write a book.”
“I need to hire someone.”
“I’ve always dreamed about starting a foundation.”
What do you think these statements are missing? You would be right if you said a date. And, they are missing more than that. The statements are missing a structure to fulfill on that future.
It’s unlikely you’ll take action on “I need to hire someone.” However, watch what shows up when you:
identify how that position will contribute to the growth of your company, calculate the revenue increase needed to support it, allocate the salary in your budget and add that position to your organizational chart (even if it’s two years down the road).
What shows up might not always be what you intend. Living into your future can be easy and bigger than what you imagined.
It might also look messy at times. As I was renovating the second half of my Business Innovation Lab CoWorking and Conference Center, the pandemic hit. The future I was living into didn’t seem so rosey or convenient. It was anything but convenient.
Rising construction costs, delays, and trades that were redirected to build pandemic-related structures were some of the inconveniences. There were a lot of shifts. When I decide to move outside of my comfort zone, I notice that life sometimes looks messy. I’ve come to realize these messy times are a challenge on how committed I am to that future. I often think it is those defining moments that stretch who I am as a leader. These experiences cause me to level up to get ready for that future.
There were days I questioned my decisions and I had to remind myself about the future possibility I was living into. There were times I also created a new possibility to live into, like a vacation on a tropical island. There’s excitement when I think about the future trip, even if it’s next year.
What future are you living into and what committed action are you taking to fulfill on it?
P.S. One of the key exercises my clients experience at the Wake Up Profitable Boot Camp for Business Owners is defining the organizational structure they are living into. What’s interesting is to see how that structure ignites a breakthrough in their thinking in scaling their business.
They begin to see opportunities that they previously dismissed because it occurred to them as more work. With a support structure, it occurs possible.
