Scale Your Business – What Not to Delegate

July 19, 2018 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

You probably hear this advice often: In order to scale your business, you must delegate daily tasks. We can all agree that it’s more efficient to outsource to someone who could perform the task quicker and it’s a much better investment than to do the tasks yourself.

Once you have the team trained to take on the delegated tasks, there are things that you may not want to delegate completely. Those things include:

1. Strategic Direction

You must own the idea of where, why and how: where you are going, why you are going there, and how you plan to get there.

As a business owner, it’s your responsibility to keep up with the latest market shifts, governmental regulations, or trends that may influence your business strategy. If you’re bogged down with daily tasks, you may miss out on critical opportunities to support the scaling of your business, like training dollars available through your local community alliance that helps fund on-the-job training.

2. Culture

As the business owner, your company’s culture is one of the key foundational elements that you want to nurture. My Excelleration mentoring clients look at the key elements of their Culture of Distinction and develop a plan to integrate those key elements into all parts of their organization.

For example, your values are part of the foundation of your company’s culture. As you scale your business, you want to be sure that anyone who you bring aboard, aligns with those values. Focus your efforts on not only reviewing the values as part of your hiring process but ensuring that candidates understand how you demonstrate those values in action throughout your organization.

3. Employee Communication and Engagement.

If you want excellent customer service, keep your eye on your employee engagement. Your employees are your internal customers. Keep the communication open on where your company stands with the goals. Additionally, keep your team aligned with their natural talents.

When our mentoring clients align their employee’s natural wiring with the right position for that wiring, everyone benefits. Employees whose wiring is a strong match for their positions are energized because they are performing work in alignment with how they naturally execute. The company also benefits with productive and energized employees who get their natural wiring met each and every day.

4. Client Relationships

Build in some face time with your clients. How your clients feel about your business and how they understand the results they gain by working with your company’s team is important to know first hand.

Surveys can fall short in getting the real story. Build in monthly or quarterly touchbase calls or site visits.

On a regular basis, I randomly call one of my clients. It’s often an opportunity for them to ask a question or assist them in figuring out something. It not only adds a valued connection, but I get real time feedback.

5. Finances

Know your Balance Sheet. Have a consistent meeting with your CPA and keep protocols in place to understand and review your financial reports. While keeping an eye on your sales goals is critical, you’ll also want to keep a close eye on expenses, especially large expenses or investments.

At the end of the day, delegate the daily tasks to leave room for the very things that will scale your business.
