Recently, I saw the movie, A Million Miles Away, an inspiring story of Jose M. Hernandez, a former NASA astronaut.
Since his early years, Hernández, together with his siblings, supported his migrant farmer parents in harvesting crops in the California fields. During his childhood, he occasionally had to forgo school and move around for extended periods. Hernández’s profound fascination with the space and stars fueled his ambition: to pursue a career as an astronaut.
There were five key “ingredients” that José M. Hernández’s father shared with him to achieve his goal:
“Find your goal”
“Know how far you are”
“Draw a roadmap”
“If you don’t know how, learn”
“When you think you’ve made it, you probably have to work harder”
What’s important to note here is that:
He applied to the NASA program and was rejected 11 times.
11 times.
Each time he was rejected, he looked at who was selected: Not to be disgruntled but to identify what they had and what he was missing.
And, when he didn’t know how, he learned.
In 1984, Hernández earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
He noticed others had a Master’s Degree. He earned a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering two years later.
Another time he was missing diving experience. He became a certified scuba diver.
Another time he was missing flight experience. He obtained his pilot’s license.
Another time he was missing speaking Russian. He learned to speak Russian.
Finally, on his 12th time applying to NASA’s training program he was accepted at the age of 42. And, despite his success, he wasn’t beyond washing dishes at his wife’s restaurant or picking grapes with his father.
Pursuing your dream isn’t always easy.
It isn’t always in your time.
It isn’t always without roadblocks.
His persistence in taking steps to develop himself is when he actualized his dream.
If you’re thinking that you’re doing all the work and wondering why nobody else has to do their own work, I invite you to consider this:
Expanding your capacity as a leader is for you: to become the better you. The best you.
It is then that your really big dream is realized.
