As you know, commitment is an important attribute in life. Commitment gives you a purpose that drives you forward no matter the circumstances.
Yet, many people would rather give up than commit to uncomfortable things that initially seem challenging. In showing businesses how to scale for over 20 years, I often see entrepreneurs play the commitment game.
I’m scared about starting a business because I’ve never done it before. Maybe I shouldn’t start because I don’t know if I can be successful.
I can’t possibly make the income to support my lifestyle so maybe I shouldn’t do this.
We shouldn’t go after that book of business, because we don’t have a chance.
This commitment struggle on the inside will cause a disconnect on the outside. The disconnect shows up in not attracting your ideal clients, misaligned marketing messages, or resistance to change the way you operate the business.
While you may consciously think you’re committed, you may also be taking action on hidden competing commitments or unconscious self-limiting beliefs operating under the surface that prevent you from playing full out. For example, I’m starting a new business, but I really like the safety and security of a regular paycheck.
These competing commitments cause you to spend a great deal of energy attempting to satisfy each. You then take action with those competing commitments trying to satisfy both but you become frustrated because you’re not producing the outcomes you intend.
Self-Reflection Assignment
Are there competing commitments you’re trying to satisfy? If you distinguish your competing commitments or identify your self-limiting beliefs that get in the way, what might you be able to transform?
