When You Play The Commitment Game, Nobody Wins

September 15, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

As you know, commitment is an important attribute in life. Commitment gives you a purpose that drives you forward no matter the circumstances.

Yet, many people would rather give up than commit to uncomfortable things that initially seem challenging. In showing businesses how to scale for over 20 years, I often see entrepreneurs play the commitment game.

I’m scared about starting a business because I’ve never done it before. Maybe I shouldn’t start because I don’t know if I can be successful.

I can’t possibly make the income to support my lifestyle so maybe I shouldn’t do this.

We shouldn’t go after that book of business, because we don’t have a chance.

This commitment struggle on the inside will cause a disconnect on the outside. The disconnect shows up in not attracting your ideal clients, misaligned marketing messages, or resistance to change the way you operate the business.

While you may consciously think you’re committed, you may also be taking action on hidden competing commitments or unconscious self-limiting beliefs operating under the surface that prevent you from playing full out. For example, I’m starting a new business, but I really like the safety and security of a regular paycheck.

These competing commitments cause you to spend a great deal of energy attempting to satisfy each. You then take action with those competing commitments trying to satisfy both but you become frustrated because you’re not producing the outcomes you intend.

Self-Reflection Assignment

Are there competing commitments you’re trying to satisfy? If you distinguish your competing commitments or identify your self-limiting beliefs that get in the way, what might you be able to transform?

Invitation

If you’re inspired to work on your inner entrepreneur and scale you’re business, I invite you to register for the Wake Up Profitable Boot Camp for Business Owners scheduled for October 20-21, 2022 and Sponsored by the Great Lakes Women’s Business Council.

As soon as you’re registered, we’ll schedule a Private Welcome Strategy Call, which includes your human wiring assessment.

Meeting Your Competing Commitments With Grace and Ease

April 21, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Meeting your competing commitments with grace and ease, can occur impossible. Ask anyone how they are doing. What is the typical answer?

I’m so busy. Followed by I got a lot going on.

We all have full lives that can, at times, collide:

⋙ Leading Your Business or Career
⋙ Managing Your To Do List
⋙ Attending Family Events
⋙ Working Out Consistently

So, how do you meet competing commitments without losing your mind?

Systems thinking. Systems thinking is a holistic approach that focuses on the way parts interrelate within the context of larger systems. When using systems thinking, you consider how each area of life interrelates.

One of my clients couldn’t seem to get traction on both her business goals and personal goals. She was naturally wired to perform functions in sequence. She would work on one thing, get it done, and move on to the next.

She saw each commitment as a separate entity. Yet, she was not meeting the very things she was committed to and put her personal goals second.

Using systems thinking, we explored options by looking at how seemingly separate commitments could be integrated. How could she get her self-care routine accomplished, be on time for that morning appointment, and forward what she was up to in her business?

There were a number of options we discussed including asking for assistance, bringing her walking shoes to work to walk during her lunch, exercising for 10 minutes, and delegating to her team.

Systems thinking expands the range of options to accomplish goals. Can you see how integrating small steps can have you take giant leaps in multiple areas having it all work?

When you have multiple commitments, you may first want to ask if you’re really committed or just interested in that goal. When you are merely interested, you will do what’s convenient. When you’re committed, you’ll do whatever it takes.

Then ask:

➥ Where in your business or life could you integrate competing commitments and have it all work?
➥ Where could you ask for assistance or delegate?
➥ Where could you calendarize or cluster appointments so you’re on time or highly efficient with your time?

Then, take action consistent with your commitment not the circumstance.

Beware of the Commitment Game You’re Playing

February 9, 2017 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

By its nature, entrepreneurship can be a risky venture. It involves committing time, money, and resources to a business idea in hopes of achieving a profit. As every successful business owner experiences at some point in growing their business, destructive doubt can creep in and sidetrack even the most experienced entrepreneur.

Destructive doubt creeps in when you allow the in-the-moment circumstances to affect your commitment to your contribution in the world. With destructive doubt in your head, you start to play the commitment game. It might sound like this:

  • I want more business, but I don’t have time to hire anyone else.
  • It’s better to have a substandard performing employee than to take the time to hire someone else.
  • I want to have a bigger business, but I want more freedom in my life.
  • Maybe I shouldn’t start X because I don’t know if I can be successful.

You make assumptions. You assume creating something better or bigger will mean a loss somewhere else. You assume that a substandard performing employee is unable to do the job, so you start telling him what to do, rather than clarifying objectives, coaching, and training him.

This struggle on the inside, will always cause a ripple effect on the outside. It will show up in the mismatch of business you attract or don’t attract, misaligned marketing messages, employee disengagement, and delayed results.

If you’re building something from destructive doubt, your competing commitments cause you to spend a great deal of energy attempting to satisfy each. Managing your business in this cloud of ambiguity is frustrating for you and confusing to your customers and your team.

As a leader, you experience a loss of personal power when you allow yourself to take action on the destructive doubt rather than on the contribution. These inner doubts create inner conflict. Inner conflict creates stress. Stress will amplify your biological wiring.

Your wiring affects the way you engage in idea generation, process thought, the environment in which you best thrive, and the amount of information you need for effective decision making. It can also trigger an impulse response that may be counterproductive.

If you’re wired to be commanding under pressure and have a destructive doubt that you can’t trust your employees, then your actions will follow suit.

The key is to create awareness on what you are committed to. What commitment will you make today to cast aside destructive doubt and take action consistent with your contribution in the world?
