As a business owner, your typical workday likely starts by going into task mode, like reading emails. Then, there might be a meeting, then another meeting, and off to a network luncheon.
You quickly get wrapped up shifting from one context to the next. It’s no wonder by the end of the day, you’re mentally spent.
Before you know it, you’re living in the context of “I don’t have time”, “I’m so busy”, “I don’t have the resources”. Accomplishing your goal feels like you’re cycling uphill backward.
What’s often missing from business leaders is clarity around your bigger contribution in the world. When you get present to your contribution and operate inside that contribution you make in the world, you’ll transform your thinking, your actions and your business.
For example, one of my clients has a business that manufactures lighting poles. Imagine taking action inside of “we make light poles.” Pretty boring, right?
Accurate? Yes. However, it doesn’t really separate them from any other business that manufactures light poles. It also doesn’t provide an empowering, creative context under which the team operates.
So, I took my client through part of my systems process to identify the bigger contribution of why the business exists. Through the process, he discovered the deeper contribution to the world.
They just don’t make light poles. They keep communities safe. In this example, my client began to take action under the brand new contribution. In his leadership role, he now also has a new empowering context and can spot when he gets off track.
Now, taking action in the space of we keep communities safe, opens up a new world of possibility and opportunity. You can also see how this approach can change the team’s decision making around quality assurance, quality improvement, and even customer service.
When you are grounded in your bigger contribution, it alters your approach to your day. When you get crystal clear on your contribution your business has in the world, you’ll be more apt to align your action, create brand new opportunities, and identify new ways to serve your community at a higher level.
You will also notice that you have a grounding framework for decision making. Getting really clear on your contribution opens up a whole new world of possibility for you, your team, and your business.
The moment you get into disempowering context, like “I’m busy” “working hard” or “have no resources,” shift your context. To get started in reframing your context, take these simple steps:
- Get clear on your bigger contribution your work makes in the world
- If necessary, reframe to an empowering context under which you are taking action. Instead of “I have no resources”, start asking for and seeking out mentorship.
- Take action consistent with the new empowered context and contribution.
Before you know it, you’ll breakthrough to levels you only imagined up until now.
