How Your Beliefs Get In Your Way

April 20, 2023 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Beliefs are a state of mind in which you regard a thing to be true. It makes sense that if you regard a thing to be true, you’re likely to take action consistent with that belief.

Some beliefs support us to open and grow, while others keep us stuck in mediocrity. At times, you may wonder why you hit a wall in an area of life or business. You may question why you’re not achieving the results you seek even though you’re taking action. This can be a frustrating place to be.

Even the most seasoned business professionals can have a belief they don’t realize is holding them back or no longer serves them. They just know something is off.

The key is to become aware of what your beliefs are serving. Many beliefs are learned and are usually designed to protect us, keep us right, look good, or avoid pain.

A good example of how beliefs can hold you back is illustrated through one of my client case studies. One of my clients had a belief that she could not differentiate herself from any other real estate brokers. She tried many different marketing avenues that didn’t do anything to distinguish her business from all others that provide similar services.

Since she believed that she couldn’t distinguish her real estate services from any others, she was resigned from doing anything differently. To challenge her belief, I asked her what made her different from other real estate brokers. As she began listing what she provided (that was distinct from all others), I suggested she had not only a signature process unique to her business but offered services beyond her other colleagues in the industry for which she could charge, creating another revenue stream for her company.

Simply testing a belief led to new branding and revenue streams for her business. She had a breakthrough in her resignation igniting a fresh new way to stand out. I invite you to consider the beliefs you have that, if reframed, could open up new opportunities for yourself, your business, and your life.

Entrepreneurial Mindset: Beliefs Are A Funny Thing, Aren’t They?

October 21, 2021 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Beliefs are a funny thing.

Beliefs are a state of mind in which you regard a thing to be true. It makes sense that if you regard a thing to be true, you’re more likely to take action consistent with that belief.

Some beliefs support us to open and grow, while others keep us stuck in mediocrity. At times, you may wonder why you’re not achieving the results you seek even though you’re taking action. This can be a frustrating place to be. It often stems from an unconscious or unexplored belief.

Even the most seasoned and successful entrepreneurs can have a belief they don’t realize is holding them back or no longer serves them. They just know something is off.

The key is to become aware of what your beliefs are serving. Many beliefs are learned and are usually designed to protect us, keep us right, look good, or avoid pain. Sometimes it’s a matter of bringing awareness to it and shifting it.

Speaking of shifting, one of my clients had a long and successful career working for a large company as an employee. She successfully climbed the corporate ladder and got the itch to start her own business.

As an employee, she was conditioned to churn out projects in a certain way. The process she followed included having her projects reviewed by several levels, changed multiple times, and re-worked before launching it. Over time, she developed a belief that this is how you launch projects.

When the time came for her to launch her new eBook for her own business, she got stopped before she even started. She became overwhelmed with the project saying, “it’s going to take a long time”.

Underneath that notion, was her employee belief that her eBook needed to be “perfect” before launching it. She tried to apply a belief that worked in a corporate structure in her entrepreneurial pursuit.

As an entrepreneur, if you wait until your product is “perfect”, you may never launch at all. While you want to make sure your product is a good one, too many revisions will slow you down and stop you before you get started.

I asked her, “What is possible if you launched your eBook, then improved it after you received some feedback from the people who downloaded it?”

There was silence, and then a break through.

With this newfound awareness, she decided to keep the format of her first eBook simple. Instead of waiting to launch a “perfect” edition, she decided to get feedback from early adopters and invite their feedback through her launch process, helping her to create an improved offering in future editions.

While her employee-minded belief worked to navigate the corporate environment, she now has access to a new entrepreneurial belief to empower her to accelerate her results. Instead of waiting to create perfection, she’s creating an eBook that invites feedback and engages her prospects.

While she’s building a following, she’s simultaneously building a better product and filling her prospect pipeline.
Beliefs are a funny thing, aren’t they?

Mastering Your Inner Self-Talk: Overcoming The Rumination Rabbit Hole Monologue

August 2, 2018 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Have you ever had one of these inner rabbit-hole monologue moments?

“Oh, that was really dumb.”
“I know this is going to turn out to be a bad day.”
“Ugh! I can’t do anything right.”

We all engage in self-talk. Mastering your inner narrative as you scale your business matters in achieving high levels of performance.

Scientists have found how people conduct their inner conversations can have a significant effect on their success. They discovered that using self-talk is not a pop psychology method, rather is a powerful instrument.

When used in very specific ways and times, your inner narrative can free the brain to perform optimally. According to an article in Psychology Today, “by toggling the way we address the self – first person or third- we flip a switch in the cerebral cortex, the center of thought, and another in the amygdala, the seat of fear, moving closer to or further from our sense of self and all its emotional intensity.”

Self-talk starts during the toddler years and is influenced as you begin to articulate tasks aloud and learn from your caretakers. You may talk through tasks and as that task is mastered, self talk is internalized until it is silent.

According to the study, there are nuances to this developmental process. In the best circumstances, the caregivers teach children a useful, step-by-step language for mastering tasks. The children use the language in their inner dialog particularly if they run into trouble and use the words taught by their caregivers, “You can do it-try again.”

Conversely, if they are exposed to impatient caretakers prone to outbursts, they set up children for self-defeating self-talk. Children exposed to these teachers learn the language of frustration and get mad at themselves the minute they feel confused using the inner narrative, like “You’re an idiot, you can’t get it right.”

Your blueprint for the inner narrative is created as a child and is deeply rooted as an adult. These words are wired into your brain early on and exist in the primitive limbic brain, seated in the amygdala, where your emotional memories take shape.

When it comes to self-talk, a University of Michigan study found that when using one’s first name minimizes social anxiety and can help exert high levels of self-discipline even under difficult circumstances.

In the study, 89 men and women were asked to give a speech about why they were ideally qualified to land their dream job. Their preparation time was five minutes.

Half were instructed to use only pronouns to describe themselves. The other half were told to use their given name.

Interestingly, those in the pronoun group were stuck in anxiety about the speech. Those who used their names felt less anxious feeling highly confident. “You can do it, Ethan,” was a typical inner narrative leading up to the speech. When judged by independent evaluators, it turns out that those who used their name during their inner monologue also performed better on the speech.

According to the study, to switch your brain out of the rumination rabbit hole, use your first name. What seems like an impossibility, a threat, or a demanding task can then show up as a challenge that can be overcome.

The study goes on to assert that when dealing with strong emotional events, taking a step back and becoming an unattached observer can be helpful. It’s easy to give advice to your friends; yet, when it comes to yourself, you have difficulty.

When using your first name with your inner narrative, you become slightly unattached (not detached) so that you can perform. A word of caution is suggested. As much as using your first name with your inner dialog can self-manage and increase your cognitive capability, don’t use it to avoid your emotions.

Change a word and you change your brain. Used correctly, your inner narrative can help you overcome the rumination rabbit hole and focus your thinking and actions to conquer emotional and difficult tasks. Try it and see what happens.

Resiliency

April 25, 2013 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Outstretched ArmsI felt inspired to write about something that I noticed (and maybe you did, too).

You see, one of my favorite cities that I have visited is Boston. Sadly, we all know about the recent tragedy. My heart and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this recent event.

Through all of the chaos and confusion of this and many other recent events, I can’t help but notice the resiliency of the human spirit.

Resiliency of the first responders who ran toward the danger.

Resiliency of the patients, who despite their pain, are moving ahead.

Resiliency of the families, some of whom are grieving, and others who are trying to find a new normal.

While life is forever changed, they are an inspiration.

I pause in awe at how resilient we can be.

At times, like these, how we must look inside, into our higher selves, to rise above …

…the distractions

…the tragedy

…the unplanned

And when we do, what and who will emerge is far beyond what we could have ever dreamed.

“We must be willing to give up the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

Savor the Moment

December 27, 2012 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

For many years, I found it difficult to live in the moment. I had all of this energy frequently thinking about the next step and moving through each moment.   For high-achieving entrepreneurs, being in the moment can be elusive. Throughout the years, I’ve found the following strategies helpful:

1. Eliminate Distractions. Finding yourself with your family yet still connected to your cell phone? Shut it off completely and enjoy the conversation. Savor each moment asking questions and using it as an opportunity to find out more about the other person and their interests.

2. Go with the Flow. Do you find yourself having to control every aspect of your day? Take a vacation from it. If you usually pick the movie or the restaurant allow others to make the decision and go with it.

3. Accept What Is. We all have irritants in our lives, whether it is sudden anxiety when we have to give a speech or the visiting relative who critiques everything from the holiday food to the décor. The mind’s tendency is to avoid it or focus on the negative feelings causing more stress. Sometimes things are beyond your control. You can just embrace the feeling for what it is. It doesn’t mean that you have to like what is happening or you are resigned to it. It simply is what it is.

Becoming mindful at any moment, takes practice. You become more mindful of the moment just by paying attention to your immediate experience.  [tweet this] When you find yourself distracted, anticipating what someone will say or judging what someone has said, focus on your breathing to bring yourself back to the moment feeling yourself breathe in and out.

Something quite remarkable happens when you’re in the moment. Often times, the very thing you’ve been wishing for arrives all because you were present to hear it.
