Level Up: Nurture Your Networking

January 10, 2019 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Your instinct is to stay in your own comfort zone by networking with people who are equally successful. If you want to achieve higher levels of success, it is imperative to surround yourself with people who are a level up influencer.

When you surround yourself with others who are highly successful, you’re in a position to learn from them, collaborate with their connections, and challenge yourself. You’ll also see how they create a system of reciprocity, that is, they actively and regularly give back to a person who was able to connect them or refer them.

This is where a lot of business owners get stopped when trying to level up their networking. They don’t network up because they don’t think they have anything to give the highly successful and influential person.

Don’t let that stop you. If someone of high influence has been generous with you in giving you their time and attention, try these ideas:

If you’re at the same event, connect with them on something interesting about the setting. When Ivan Misner, the Chairman of Business Network International met Jack Canfield, Best Selling Author of Chicken Soup for the Soul for the first time, they were at book signing for speakers. Because the audience was at dinner, no one was at the signing. Ivan Misner approached Jack Canfield and started to share a story about the time where Ivan had only one person at his book signing – and it was his mother. Ivan shared that his mother acted like she was a fan and made a big deal at the signing that people started crowding around his table. Jack Canfield laughed so hard that it helped him remember Ivan so well that Jack invited Ivan to join his personal network called the Transformational Leadership Council.

Refer their book to others and include the link to the book on Amazon. Any publicity you extend to an influencer gets noticed. When you genuinely show appreciation by sharing their book with others on social media with a link to the book, leave a gracious review on Amazon, or mention their book on your blog, it’s a great way to start a relationship. It’s not always a one-and-done either. Interact with them regularly and watch the relationship foster.

Refer them to a major news outlet or to another major player. What a great way to be remembered than to connect them with another major player.

There are many ways to give back to a successful business professional. When you nurture the relationship, watch what happens.

If you’re ready to level up your networking this year, remember to join us on Thursday, January 31, 2019 for the Level Up Networking Mixer where Livonia Mayor Dennis K. Wright will be sharing business opportunities happening regionally.

Networking Mojo: 3 Tips to Maximize Your Networking

June 25, 2015 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

networkingmojoDo you remember your last face-to-face networking event? Are you still in contact with anyone you met there?

Consider the value of your time and effort in getting to the event. Did you make sure you got a return on that investment?

If the answer is no to the last question, it’s time to rev up your networking mojo. If you want to become a masterful strategic networker, you have to be the one that makes it happen and that means taking a proactive approach.

Many business owners take a haphazard approach to networking and wonder why it doesn’t pay off. Make sure you:

• Evaluate whether or not the networking event gets you in front of your ideal prospects or referral sources.
• Give referrals.
• Have a systematic way to follow up
• Are clear in your description of your ideal clients

The next time you attend a network event, get your networking mojo back by using these tips:

1. Be the Masterful Connector

As you enter the event, identify who you know and who you don’t know. While you it’s natural to gravitate toward people you already know, focus on the individuals you haven’t met.
Introduce a new acquaintance to the people you know. Break the ice between them by sharing something they both might have in common. This jump starts their conversation.
Your new acquaintance will appreciate that you showed an interest, connected them with others (ideally in their target market), and made them feel welcomed especially if they are a newcomer.

2. Be Strategic

Newbie business owners think they need to “sell” their services when they network. Effective networking is about relationships not about trying to sell people you just met on your products or services the first time you meet them.

The next time you attend a networking event, focus on the other person by asking questions about:

• Why or how they got into their line of business
• Their interests or goals for the year
• Their ideal referral

Then, set up the meeting between them and their ideal referral. What a great way to start creating a relationship. They’ll surely remember that you proactively brought business to them.

3. Seize the Moment to Shine

When you’re asked by your network that common phrase, “If I can ever help you, please let me know” seize the moment!

Have an idea on what you need, like:

• An introduction with a decision maker at a company you’re interested in working with
• A supplier to help you bring a product to market
• A panel speaker for an upcoming nonprofit event you’re planning

When they see that you have a specific answer, it shows that you are prepared to conduct business. It also instills confidence that you are a seasoned business owner.

A strategic approach to networking creates long-lasting relationships. Over time, you’ll develop referral partnerships by design all because you connected others, were strategic in your approach, and seized the moment. These partnerships will help you create a referral system that does the work for you helping you grow a profitable business.

How to Make a Great Impression in the First Five Seconds

May 21, 2015 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

handshake woman partnershipsOn average you have a total of five seconds to make a good impression when you meet individuals. Consider how quickly that five seconds goes by especially when you’re talking to a new prospect, on an interview, or meeting your date for the first time!

Talk about pressure!

Would having a deeper insight into how people tick help you to cultivate that relationship even in the first five seconds?

You bet it would!

You might even be surprised to learn that spotting how a person wants to receive their information is a teachable skill. I teach it to my Excellerate Success Institute students.

When you discover how others want to receive their information which comes from your natural wiring, watch how quickly you can develop rapport with someone. When I spoke at Authentic Leadership Day yesterday, I placed everyone in groups according to their natural wiring.

Once the exercise was complete, I asked everyone in attendance to notice two things when each group was reporting out their results. I asked them to notice what the group said and how they said it.

When you notice what people talk about from these two filters, you will begin to have some insights on how that person wants to receive their information. When you deliver information the way the other person wants to receive it, you’re not only honoring the other person but you will be more effective in your communication and relationship building.

As many of the attendees discovered during the exercise, your wiring is always present and becomes amplified when under stress. For some people, meeting new people can be stressful so your natural wiring will become amplified.

For example, with people who are naturally wired to create and act on their own ideas, they extend their hand confidentially and with a first handshake will often use both their first and last name when introducing themselves.

On one occasion, one of my clients who is similarly wired in this way, fired off a series of questions to someone who liked their information more methodically. Before she could answer his first question, he fired off another question. This rapid fire sequence was frustrating to the more methodical communicator.

In this case, it’s important for him to notice the frustration on her face and slow down the conversation. If not, she might just shut down all together or simply erupt in frustration. In just this first five seconds, she would have already decided she wasn’t going to do business with him.

There is always a fine balance with this, too. You’re at your best when you work within your own wiring. At times, however, your natural wiring needs to be managed to be more effective.

To get the insights on your natural wiring, join me for my Wired to Win online, interactive workshop which starts June 18,.

You and I will work together and I’ll answer all of your questions about the best environment you thrive in;

You’ll get your own AcuMax Index wiring report complete with management and coaching tips; and

You’ll also get immediate access to the audio version of program so you can start to spot the wiring in others starting today!
