It’s Monday and I’m sitting at a makeshift desk looking out of my office window admiring the sunny day. It’s a contrast to the recent rainy days.
I notice the trucks and cars making a whizzing sound as they drive by wondering if they notice the new activity in front of this long-vacant building.
I’m holding the space of excitement for what’s next and the anxiousness to pass inspections.
In one moment, the realization of all of the planning, being my own general contractor, and running my business hit me. It sounded like the practice run of an orchestra: Missed notes and instruments out of key, in my head anyway.
In that moment, I’m discouraged knowing the inspectors found minor things that were missing, like signage on the bathrooms in the old part of the building we didn’t intend to upgrade until we get tenants.
While it seemed odd to me to have to put signage on the wall of a bathroom where toilets were capped and not going to be used, it was still a mandate.
It was a moment where I could have gotten stopped. I calculated the emotional math between standing up for a point and getting this task complete. I decided to drive to nearest store to pick up the bathroom signs and install them.
A short time later, the phone rings. It’s the inspector.
All I hear is that my Certificate of Occupancy is approved.
It’s approved!
We did it!
Tears of joy.
Happy dance.
Cue the music.
Like a finely-tuned orchestra, it finally all came together.
