When I first started Excellerate Associates over two decades ago, I remember several people suggesting that I market my company by speaking.
Since I had done a fair amount of training and presenting throughout my career, I thought it could be an easy way to market my business.
I couldn’t be more wrong.
It wasn’t easy.
At first, I winged it.
I don’t recommend that.
Over time, I realized, speaking wasn’t about..
Overloading people with information
Reading from slides
Perfection
Rapid delivery
Using technical jargon
Avoiding emotion
Filling time
By acknowledging what speaking to an audience is not about, you can better align your approach to truly connect with and engage your audience, ensuring your message is received, relevant, and appreciated.
Once I learned what speaking wasn’t, I then applied my systems approach, a look at the whole process of presenting.
It became abundantly clear about what wasn’t working.
I then became …
-intentional about my strategy,
-clear in my messaging, and
-dedicated to the inner game of presenting.
I learned from experts.
Some of it worked.
Some of it didn’t feel authentic.
Over the years when I applied my system of speaking consistently, I received some big compliments after presenting:
“You just saved my marriage.”
“I learned more in 1 hour about my brother than I learned in five decades!”
“At the break, I used the approach you recommended, and the conversation turned out great!”
These moments of genuine impact are why I continue to speak to professional associations and also work with CEO’s and business professionals who also want to present with authenticity, clarity, confidence, and greater ease. By recognizing what presenting isn’t also opens up a new world of opportunity.
