How Your Beliefs Get In Your Way

April 20, 2023 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Beliefs are a state of mind in which you regard a thing to be true. It makes sense that if you regard a thing to be true, you’re likely to take action consistent with that belief.

Some beliefs support us to open and grow, while others keep us stuck in mediocrity. At times, you may wonder why you hit a wall in an area of life or business. You may question why you’re not achieving the results you seek even though you’re taking action. This can be a frustrating place to be.

Even the most seasoned business professionals can have a belief they don’t realize is holding them back or no longer serves them. They just know something is off.

The key is to become aware of what your beliefs are serving. Many beliefs are learned and are usually designed to protect us, keep us right, look good, or avoid pain.

A good example of how beliefs can hold you back is illustrated through one of my client case studies. One of my clients had a belief that she could not differentiate herself from any other real estate brokers. She tried many different marketing avenues that didn’t do anything to distinguish her business from all others that provide similar services.

Since she believed that she couldn’t distinguish her real estate services from any others, she was resigned from doing anything differently. To challenge her belief, I asked her what made her different from other real estate brokers. As she began listing what she provided (that was distinct from all others), I suggested she had not only a signature process unique to her business but offered services beyond her other colleagues in the industry for which she could charge, creating another revenue stream for her company.

Simply testing a belief led to new branding and revenue streams for her business. She had a breakthrough in her resignation igniting a fresh new way to stand out. I invite you to consider the beliefs you have that, if reframed, could open up new opportunities for yourself, your business, and your life.

Beliefs Are An Interesting Thing, Aren’t They?

May 5, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Beliefs are an interesting thing, aren’t they?

Beliefs are a state of mind in which you regard a thing to be true. It makes sense that if you regard a thing to be true, you’re more likely to take action consistent with that belief.

Some beliefs support us to open and grow, while others keep us stuck. At times, you may wonder why you’re not quite getting the results you seek even though you’re taking action. Staying stuck often stems from an unconscious belief.

Even the most seasoned and successful entrepreneurs can have a belief they don’t realize is holding them back or no longer serves them. They just know something is off.

The key is to become aware of what that belief is serving. It’s usually designed to protect us, keep us “right” or avoid pain. Sometimes it’s a matter of bringing awareness to it that’s in our blind spot and gently shifting it so that you see it, reframe it, and take action consistent with a possibility.

What Limiting Beliefs Sound Like

Some limiting beliefs are subtle or based on assumptions or conclusions, like

• “They don’t care.” I see this happen when people run up against an obstacle sometimes to justify their inaction around a goal or refusal to reframe a situation.
• “I only have a limited time for personal development away from my work week.” “I can’t possibly take off two days, a week, or more.” I hear these phrases when people have a belief around investing in their own personal development or self care.
• “If I start a business, they will come.” (A frequently seen belief when someone transitions from an employee to an entrepreneur, assuming that getting clients is requires nothing further than hanging an open-for-business shingle).
• “I’m not enough.” “I’m not doing something right.” “They underestimate me.”

Imagine if your action was aligned with any one of these limiting beliefs. If you have the belief of “they don’t care” running in the background, what do you bring into each conversation with that person you believe doesn’t care? “I can’t possibly take off two days from my work.” You will never invest in your own personal development that can drastically change how you operate in the world. “They underestimate me,” then work proving them wrong. That’s a lot of energy focused on a limiting belief rather than a positive possibility.

How Limiting Beliefs Can Develop

Here’s how a belief can develop. One of my clients had a long and successful career at a corporation. She successfully climbed the corporate ladder and got the itch to start her own business.

As an employee, she was conditioned to churn out projects in a certain way. The process she followed included having her projects reviewed by several levels, changed multiple times, and re-worked before launching it. Over time, she developed a belief that this is how you launch projects.

When the time came for her to launch her new eBook that educated her prospects on her proprietary Signature Process, she kept getting stopped before she even started. She got overwhelmed with the project saying, “it’s going to take a long time.” Underneath that notion, was her employee belief that her eBook needed to be “perfect” before launching it. She applied a belief that worked in a corporate structure in her entrepreneurial pursuit.

As an entrepreneur, if you wait until your product is “perfect”, you may never launch at all. While you want to make sure your product is a good one, too many revisions will slow you down and stop you before you get started.

I asked her, “What is possible if you launched your eBook, then improved it after you received some feedback from the people who downloaded it?” There was silence, then a breakthrough.

With this newfound awareness, she decided to keep the format of her first eBook simple. Instead of waiting to launch a “perfect” edition, she decided to get feedback from early adopters and invite their feedback through her launch process, helping her to create an improved offering in future editions.

While her employee-minded belief worked to navigate the corporate environment, she now has access to a new entrepreneurial belief to empower her to accelerate her results. Instead of waiting, she’s creating an eBook that invites feedback and engages her prospects.

While she’s building a following, she’s simultaneously building a better product and filling her prospect pipeline. Beliefs are an interesting thing, aren’t they?

Can One Word Really Improve Your Sales?

April 10, 2014 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

dollar sign goldThe word was so powerful it changed consumer behavior.

Nobody even questioned the process that contained this word.

It almost seemed unreal that one word could make such a difference.

What was that word?

Repeat.

If you read Benjamin Cheever’s book, The Plagiarist, a marketing executive becomes an overnight success by simply adding the word repeat to shampoo instructions: Shampoo, rinse, repeat. As the story goes, shampoo sales skyrocketed.

While this example is a work of fiction, many shampoo bottles had this word in their instructions.

Why would you need the word repeat in the instructions? If you were to look at consumer behavior in the 1950’s when shampoo was mass marketed, many people didn’t shampoo their hair as often as we do today.

Over the years, consumers changed their habit by washing their hair daily. With more frequent shampoos, hair wasn’t as dirty so it did not require consumers to repeat the process, making the word repeat unnecessary.

While there was a change in consumer behavior there was also an opportunity. Conditioner was added to the hair care process. Suddenly, the industry benefited from an additional revenue stream.

So, what’s the point?

Can one word improve sales?

Perhaps. But the greater lesson is that what we learned, what we know, and what we’ve seen may no longer be relevant in today’s marketplace.

When things change, look at the opportunity that exists. There are times where we try to apply what we learned, what we know, and what we’ve seen and wonder why it no longer works any more. It may be just the right moment to try a different process.

Take a few minutes to review what isn’t working in your business or life. Identify ways you could approach it differently and see what happens.

Are You Making Fatal Assumptions That Let Revenue Slip Through Your Fingers?

January 9, 2014 by Lisa Mininni 1 Comment

question the answerMaking assumptions is part of doing business. Every day, you act on assumptions because it is nearly impossible to have every piece of information before taking action.

Assumptions are often based on your experiences, what you learned, and part of your system of beliefs. If your beliefs are not sound, your assumptions are not sound.

These assumptions can serve you or they can stop you. They can lead to great profit or be the reason revenue slipped through your fingers.

In this week’s video, I share an important lesson on assumptions and two important questions that I ask myself whenever I’m making an assumption. These questions have empowered me to make better decisions consistent with my vision rather than current circumstances.

“I Don’t Have Time” is BS

September 26, 2013 by Lisa Mininni 1 Comment

Systems give you freedom. Shift a Belief System this week and watch what happens.
@lisamininni [Tweet this]

people clocks business i dont have timeYou heard it.

You said it.

And, quite frankly, it’s an excuse…

“I don’t have time.”

It’s BS really. A Belief System.

A belief system is something you establish.  It can work for you or be self limiting. Let’s face it. We all have 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Yes, some things take more time than we allot, we have unexpected stuff happen, and we have commitments to fulfill. The reality is, you and you alone determine your schedule.

You determine your:

  • Boundaries
  • Priorities
  • Decisions

The next time you’re tempted to say, “I don’t have time” ask yourself, how could I accomplish this? You may have to set a boundary, identify your priorities, or make a decision.

You may also want to:

Ask for help. If you’re doing everything yourself, discover the freedom that comes from letting go. When you enroll others in the solution, you expand your capacity for miracles in your life.

Automate a process. It may be as simple as having your bills automatically deducted from your account or streamline an existing manual process.

Teach others what you know. When you give others an opportunity to step up, you not only learn a new skill of delegating, you allow others to expand their capacity.

See how one shift in a belief system can have a trickle effect?

Systems give you freedom. Shift a Belief System this week and watch what happens.
