One Effective Habit to be Highly Productive

Thousands of books have been written on highly effective habits to make people more productive. To become more productive, you may have even tried excessive amounts of caffeine or purchased the latest organizing binder with mixed results.

With almost 20 years showing business leaders a systems approach, there is one habit that makes a real difference in accomplishing what matters most. It’s so simple, but is often completely missing in your processes, communication, requests, or when giving directions.

What is This Habit?

Grounding actions in a date.

It might sound overly simplistic but think about it.

Does your every day language sound like this?

• “Let’s have lunch!”
• “I look forward to hearing from you.”
• “Please get back with me asap.”
• “Sounds interesting. I’ll call you.”
• “I will host a …workshop or webinar soon.”
• “Get back with me when you’ve reviewed the proposal.”

Most people can’t and don’t work well with vagueness. Be exact to attract results by grounding requests, directives, or communication in a date.

• “Let’s have lunch, what’s your schedule look like for (DATE) next Fri at 12 pm”
• “I look forward to hearing from you. Let’s schedule a follow up conversation on Wed March 1 (DATE)”
• “Please get back with me by Fri June 4 (DATE)”
• “Sounds interesting. I’ll call you by close of business next Wed (DATE) to get that scheduled.”
• “I will host a workshop by March 31(DATE)”
• “Let’s schedule a (DATE) to finalize your decision about the proposal. How long will it take to review it?”

Notice that all of the requests were grounded by a date. The habit doesn’t stop there. Round out your dates with an action. Remember to log the date into your calendar and send a calendar invitation.

When you implement this highly effective habit, you’ll become known for being one of those productive and reliable people others can trust. You’ll also notice that you have improved focus, intentionality, and outcomes.

P.S. While we’re on the subjects of habits and dates, if you’re in the habit of waiting until the last minute, you might want to consider that the deadline to take advantage of the scholarship for the Wake Up Profitable Boot Camp ends on March 31, 2021. Tuition will go up on April 1. Time to break the habit by taking inspired action and registering today.

Mindset Systems

You might have heard of a systems mindset but have you heard of mindset systems? A mindset system is a process of declaring how you want the day will go.

The way you start your day can be the most important indicator of how you spend the rest of your day. It’s an integral inner system that influences your outcomes.

The problem is that many business professionals start with good intentions to create a mindset system but then slack off. Like starting any new habit, it takes intentionality and commitment to have it become part of your daily routine and integrated into your company culture.

Your Inner Mindset System

Your mindset system can be really subtle, like when you frequently say, “I’m not clear,” “nobody listens to me,” or “what else can happen.” This negative or self-limiting messaging is creating your world.

If you find yourself in this mindset system, there is good news. You can change it. The first step is to integrate your new mindset system and messaging into your daily routine.

If you have a morning routine, like getting on a treadmill or engaging in your daily yoga, use that as an opportunity to shift your messaging. Instead of “I’m not clear” start with: “My vision gets clearer every day.” Instead of “Nobody listens to me” say “I am articulate and people listen”. Instead of “what else can happen” say “I invite exciting and positive opportunities into my life.”

Make Mindset Systems Part of Your Company’s Culture

As a leader, when you practice your own mindset system, it puts a level of integrity when you integrate it into your company’s culture. If you hear nothing but bad news at every meeting, it’s time to start each meeting with intentions. Make sure your first agenda item invites your team to share what they have accomplished to move their goals forward and set an intention for how the day will go.

By consistently engaging in these mindset systems, notice what begins to transform. And, if you’ve gotten out of the habit of setting your intentions and declaring what you want to have happen, it might be a good time to get back on track. Don’t you think?

Happy 2020!

Happy 2020!

Wow! This year has started out with so many activities! All of the seeds my team and I planted in 2019 are already starting to sprout early!

Next week I’ll be catching a plane to San Antonio, Texas where I’ll be speaking to a group of contribution-conscious business owners. I’m also really looking forward to getting some sun (especially since Michigan gets very little in the winter months).

We’ve also made some changes to this year’s business-building workshops/classes. We know it’s sometimes a challenge to leave your business on a weekday so we are offering some of our classes on Saturdays!
