Human Wiring Lesson: What’s Underneath How You Enroll Someone?

January 30, 2020 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

At some point in your career, you’re selling something. You sell an idea, a product, or a service. Whether you’ve been in sales for a long time or have never sold, the key to enrolling someone in that idea, product or service is easy when you understand what’s underneath engaging them.

Human Wiring and Enrolling

When my clients learn about human wiring when having a sales conversation, they are relieved to hear that selling isn’t about persuading someone to buy something they don’t want. It’s not about forcing someone to change their mind. It’s also not saying certain things in an order to force an outcome. Yet, these are the very beliefs people have on their mind when they are trying to sell something.

Sales is about honoring the other person. The highest form of honoring another person is finding out what they want and delivering communication they way they want to receive it.

One of my clients had been in sales for many years but was new to her understanding about human wiring. She understood that she was energized by face-to-face interaction. She exuded energy and was the go-to fun maker. Naturally, she loved the social aspects of her position and excelled at motivating others in participating in projects.

However, there was one manager she had difficulty with enrolling in becoming part of a special project group. While she knew this manager for a long time and liked her, the manager, at times, occurred to her as someone who dismissed her ideas and was abrupt in her communication.

When I asked my client how she would invite this manager to participate in a task force group, my client responded with her natural impulse: to enroll her as she would like to be enrolled. She said she was going to engage the manager by sharing how fun it was going to be and explain what a great experience it was going to be for the manager. Before my client could further explain her approach, I invited her to consider another way.

How You Experience Someone is Key to Understanding How to Enroll Them

When someone describes someone and how they experience the other person, it often can be attributed to an element of human wiring that is the opposite. I asked her to engage the manager by finding out what was important to the manager. I also suggested that she focus on the results the manager wanted to get from her participation in the task force.

The next day, the phone rings. My client was thrilled that she successfully engaged her manager in participating in the task force with ease. In that moment of enrolling her manager, she realized that when she was focused on delivering communication the way the manager needed to receive it, like asking the manager what was important to her and focusing on the results, it was easy to enroll the manager in participating on the task force.

Engaging someone in an idea, product, and service is simple. Find out what’s important to them and deliver the communication in the way they need to receive it. When you do, it’s the highest form of honoring the other person.

Remember Natural Wiring When Navigating Unexpected Change In Your Business

May 4, 2017 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

If there is one thing that is constant today, it is that the business landscape is in perpetual state of flux. Some changes can be more jarring than others, like the sudden passing of a key employee, the unexpected resignation of multiple employees, or the crash of your phone and computer systems right before a big launch of a new product.

As a leader, it’s important to know one key element about powerfully navigating unexpected change. Change will automatically amplify your and your team’s natural wiring.

The reality is everyone’s unique mix of wiring is distinct. As a leader, you can skillfully and artfully navigate any kind of change with greater ease when you keep wiring in mind.

To skillfully lead unexpected change, it’s important to understand human wiring. Wiring is something you’re born with and dictates the type of environment in which a person is best equipped to thrive and succeed and the kind of environment they prefer to live and work. With the knowledge of someone’s wiring, you can recognize and appreciates what matters to them, how they communicate and what they innately need when communicating with them.

There will be those naturally wired to put their thumbprint on the change and be concerned with the results or outcomes of the change. Others will want to be able to voice their concerns. Still others want to know the next steps and nurture those impacted by the change. You also have those wired for certainty. They want to know the who, what, where and whys of the change.

As a leader, how you show up and address each of these wiring needs can mean the difference between getting stuck in a rut or causing your team to skillfully navigate the change with grace. The words you choose, the methods of conveying the messages, and the pace at which you implement matter in effectively moving your organization ahead.

Different situations require different tools. When you increase your personal awareness of human wiring (including your own), you discover a level of communication that makes a highly effective and lasting difference when navigating change.

A Fast, Effective Productivity Hack to Finally Get Your Book or Blog Written

March 2, 2017 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Being more productive is something everyone wants to achieve. It can be difficult to sustain your productivity especially if you attempt to use an approach that is not in alignment with how you naturally execute.

One of the hidden reasons you don’t get your book written or can’t seem to consistently write your blogs can be related to your natural wiring. The task of writing is a heads-down, internal-thinking activity. Not everyone generates ideas that way.

If you are not naturally wired to sit and write, then you may procrastinate writing. For example, if you are wired with a high sense of urgency and naturally create ideas by talking them through then you will procrastinate writing that blog or book.

Innately, you believe it will take too long so you put it off. You might also avoid it since writing is opposite of how you create ideas. The act of writing may not be fast enough or verbal enough for you and your natural wiring.

My most productive time is spent on the treadmill. Since I have a high sense of urgency and talk through my ideas, I can talk my blog in minutes. Otherwise, it takes me much longer if I were to sit and think through the ideas.

Of course, writing can be tricky on a treadmill. So, I use a built-in productivity solution. You likely have the tool at your fingertips, too!

On your phone, open up an email and address the email to yourself. Your smart phone’s keyboard has a microphone. Press the record button start talking. Your message is automatically transcribed in the message section of the email.

When finished, press the send key. When you get to your desk, the email is waiting for you. You can copy and paste the text into your favorite word processing program or send it to your assistant for publishing.

Whether you want to be more consistent in writing your marketing blogs or want to finally get that book of yours written, use this handy productivity solution to finally get the job done.

A Tip for Saying No to a Verbal Thinker

July 14, 2016 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

artofsayingnoverbalthinkerAs a leader, you can communicate with effectiveness and grace when you deliver information with a person’s natural wiring in mind. Your natural wiring or hardwiring is something you’re born with, it’s distinct from behaviors, and stays with you your entire lifetime.

As you know if you’ve been part of my community, your wiring determines how much autonomy you innately need, how you process thought, the environment in which you best thrive, and the amount of information you need for effective decision making.

In last week’s blog article, I shared two tips business leaders can use to empower their team when the team member is wired with a high degree of autonomy. This week, we’ll focus on what to keep in mind if you are delivering information to a person who is a Verbal Thinker.

Verbal Thinker (or External Thinker) is the informal term to describe individuals who are naturally wired higher on the Communication spectrum. They have a high social drive which seeks to connect with others.

They also verbalize to crystallize their thoughts. They bounce ideas off of others to formalize and finalize their own thoughts. This process of casting the thought a loud and judging the reaction received from others helps them to develop their idea.

When little or no response is received from another person, this motivates a Verbal Thinker to repeat themselves or restate the idea to ensure the concept is fully understood. As a leader, you may even find that they come back to the same issue over and over especially if you haven’t fully acknowledged their idea or concept.

When working with a person who is higher on the Communication spectrum and you need to say no to their promotion, it’s important to be in their world. Their self-confidence is derived externally. They respond positively when receiving acknowledgement for their performance. However, if you need to say no to their promotion, this can be a real hit to their self-confidence, which they innately get externally.

How you frame the news can make a real difference to Verbal Thinkers. They innately like to give and receive help. When saying no, let them know how you will assist them to receive the necessary skills or training they might be missing so that they can learn the added skills to turn that no into a yes.

Do You Have a Big Gap in Your Hiring Process?

July 2, 2015 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

HandshakeIt has been estimated that businesses are taking 25 working days to fill vacant positions. Why the delay?

Part of the increased length in hiring is that businesses are sharpening their pre-hire screenings and with good reason. The costs of the hiring process alone is climbing in excess of $50,000 per hire.

When you consider salary, taxes, and unproductive hours, like sick time, it’s no wonder business owners want to be more diligent in evaluating their new hires. If that person turns out to be a mismatch for the position, you’ll quickly eat through any return on investment through your costs in training, coaching or counseling them.

As my Excellerate Success Institute clients discover, it is possible to consistently hire the best person for the job, regardless if you’re hiring an employee or an independent contractor. Attracting and hiring the best fit is a matter of understanding the work requirements for the position. Sounds simple, right?

It may sound simple, but actually hiring the best person is tricky and involves more than understanding the work requirements for the position. You can try different people in a particular job until you find one that is the perfect fit but that is a costly endeavor.

To have a distinct advantage in hiring the best fit, every business should have a well-defined hiring process, which may include:

  • Understanding the work requirements for the position
  • Outlining the goals of the position, so you know when the person is successful
  • Conducting face-to-face interviews for asking focused questions
  • Conducting background references and screening
  • Assessing a person’s natural wiring, which reveals hidden strengths and natural motivation

Take the last point, assessing a person’s natural wiring. You may agree that people can be, at times, difficult to really know just from a face-to-face interview that’s why assessing their natural wiring should be a part of your hiring process.

Over the years, I have seen an employee earning in excess of $350,000 completely unhappy in a job for which she was well qualified. In another example, a well-qualified sales manager was a heart attack waiting to happen when he was transferred into a brand new division and product line. The nature of the job was to grow this brand new division. He was naturally wired to improve existing systems so the idea of creating something from scratch was just not in alignment with his natural wiring.

In both of these examples, the people brought the right experience, knowledge, and skills to do the job, but something was missing.

The way they would execute the requirements of the job to get the results were completely opposite of what the job required. Regardless of how much money they were paid or how great a job seemed relative to their experience, they wanted out!

For business owners, knowing a candidate’s wiring before making the offer can mean the difference between success or failure in the job. Natural wiring tells us the environment in which someone thrives. Knowing a candidate’s natural communication preferences, most productive work style, thinking processes, and how they are best engaged in decision making enables employers to custom fit a candidate to a job that naturally motivates them to succeed.

As business owner remember – your profitability is in your team’s productivity. Make sure to hire the best fit from the beginning.
