Do You Over-Deliver?

June 13, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

In your quest to deliver value, do you over deliver? You might be surprised by the following story and the impact that over-delivering has on your audience…

Sarah was a knowledgeable professional, known for her meticulous attention to detail and deep expertise in her field. She had a reputation for delivering presentations packed with valuable insights and comprehensive information. Every time she walked into a room, she was prepared to wow her audience with her extensive expertise.

Her heart was in the right place: She wanted to deliver value. Sarah had spent weeks gathering data, analyzing trends, and preparing a slide deck filled with charts, graphs, and bullet points. She was confident that her thorough approach would impress her audience.

The day of her presentation arrived, and Sarah stood before a room full of her ideal prospects, ready to share. As she clicked through slide after slide, she noticed the audience’s initial interest turning into glazed expressions and frequent glances at their watches.

She over delivered. Despite the impressive amount of information she provided, the room felt heavy with an unspoken confusion.

At the end of her hour-long presentation, Sarah opened the floor to questions. Instead of the enthusiastic engagement she expected, there was an awkward silence. Finally, one audience member hesitantly asked, “This is all very thorough, but I’m a little overwhelmed.”

Sarah realized that although she had delivered a wealth of information, she had failed to provide clear, actionable steps. The audience was overwhelmed, unable to distill her insights into a coherent strategy.

Determined to improve, Sarah enrolled in the Speaker Lab Master Class. Here, she learned the importance of aligning her presentation style with her Authentic Speaker Style. She discovered how to structure her content to be enrolling, engaging and impactful, ensuring her audience could easily grasp and, most importantly, act on her key messages.

If you share in the same struggles as Sarah when it comes to presenting and public speaking, I invite you to register in our upcoming Speaker Lab Master Class happening on June 26 with feedback sessions online on July 10 and 24.

Like Sarah, you will learn to:

Simplify and Prioritize: She focused on the most critical points and presented them in a clear, concise manner.

Engage with Purpose: She used storytelling and relatable examples to enroll and connect with her audience emotionally and intellectually.

Provide Clear Action Steps: She concluded her presentations with specific, actionable recommendations, making it easy for her audience to understand their next steps.

Armed with these new skills, Sarah’s next presentation was a stark contrast to her previous efforts. She delivered her key messages with clarity and confidence, and this time, the room buzzed with engaged discussion. Audience members left with a clear understanding of what to do next, and Sarah’s reputation soared not just as a knowledgeable expert, but as a compelling and effective communicator and go-to resource. A number of people sought out her expertise.

Sarah’s journey from overwhelming her audience to empowering them with actionable insights is a testament to the transformative power of the Speaker Lab. By learning to connect authentically and use the art of enrollment, she was able to turn her wealth of knowledge into a powerful tool for driving action and achieving results.

Your Presentation Process

June 2, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Picture this: you are thrilled because you have a shot at getting in front of your ideal audience.

To enroll them in your idea, you spend some time working out your content. As you deliver the presentation, you assume that you’ll figure out the rest.

You deliver your speech and are quite pleased with your presentation. You’re relieved to finish, the audience claps, and some people ask questions.

Then you wait. And wait. And wait.

You check your phone to make sure it’s working.

Confusion turns into frustration.

You simply don’t understand why you’re not getting calls because they seemed to love your message. Your time, effort, money, travel and nothing to show for it.

If you presented to an audience, but your idea is not accepted, they don’t buy into your services, or you’re not getting leads, I invite you to consider you’re leaving out important elements in the presentation process.

While presenting may seem easy, it takes more than being comfortable speaking in front of a group. There are key strategic, tactical, and developmental elements to generating a positive outcome.

From reverse engineering your presentation to engaging the audience, your presentation should be an experience that leaves your audience with value and a clear outcome. If you’re wanting to authentically connect with your audience, it takes a commitment to uniting your strategy, tactics, and developmental elements with each presentation.

The speaker who prepares will be the one relaxed and at ease. It’s this authenticity that will keep you top of mind.
What would you need to put into your next presentation so that you achieve your desired outcomes?

Winging Your Presentation Isn’t a Strategy

May 26, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

People of all ages, occupations, and experiences struggle with public speaking. Although 77% of the US population feels some anxiety, some business professionals will play off their natural orator abilities and wing it then wonder why they are not getting the outcomes they wish they would from a speaking engagement. Winging your presentation isn’t a strategy.

We’ve all be there where the speaker talked without taking a pause, didn’t engage the audience, and got distracted by their electronics failing. Add in the complexities of the pandemic shifting communication from onsite to online, winging it is inefficient.

The reality is presenting takes know how. It might surprise you to learn that it’s also not about you. While it can seem like it’s all about the speaker, great speakers know it isn’t about them.

Many years ago, I attended a conference to hear one of the best speakers I’ve ever heard. Ever. To this day, I regularly refer her book to my clients. What did she do that no other speaker was able to do? Empower the audience to take inspired actionable steps. We didn’t take away nuggets, we took away implementable steps.

The delivery was also authentic and engaging. You were left with long-term knowledge not short-term hype.

Whether you’re enrolling others in an idea, product, service, presenting takes skill. When you learn the skills and align them with your own human wiring so your delivery is authentic, you lead that presentation confidently.

Before you present the next time, start by asking yourself, what does my audience want to walk away with that would help forward what they are up to? It’s an often forgotten, but highly regarded question every speaker should ask themselves.

Speaking Tip: Share Your Signature Story

May 20, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

One of the best ways to quickly establish credibility and connect with your audience is through sharing your signature story. A good way to develop a solid connection with your audience is to share a core story or message that is an authentic expression of you.

Creating that signature story is the secret that all good presenters share. Over time, you become so good at telling your signature story that people will request you speak over and over again. My tire iron story, for example, is one that ties into many lessons, one that I’ve used for years and have become known for. I’ve had audience members who have seen me speak on many occasions and have said how that story gives them chills but also inspires them each time they hear it.

Ideas for Creating A Signature Story

Your signature story can describe great loss or even hardship and how you overcame it. As a leader, you may feel vulnerable so you have to be emotionally ready to share it. Stories that demonstrate hardship help you to connect with your audience on an emotional level. When presented with authenticity and grace, you create a circle of comfort that envelops audience members especially when they share a similar experience.

Your signature story might even come from an embarrassing situation or misunderstanding that snowballed out of control. Some of the funniest signature stories are born from the most humiliating moments and offer important learning lessons.

When choosing a story, remember to stick with personal stories. Because you’ve lived them, you can recall details and provide insights that makes your story come alive. When it is the reason you got into business, it helps develop your credibility. Your story is what makes you unique and your ideal clients or audience members will connect with you or want to work with you.

Your story becomes insightful and memorable through development and performance. What can be seen as an ordinary experience becomes an amazing story especially if you tie it into learning a life lesson, a turning point, and even overcoming adversity. When you weave your story with key points, you leave your audience connecting with you and engaged.

Winging a presentation is not a strategy. Your Signature Story is just the beginning step to connect and engage your audience.
