Building Better Teams and Company Cultures Through Human Wiring Insights

January 9, 2025 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Have you ever responded to someone without truly understanding what they were saying? It happens to all of us. Often, we find ourselves physically present but mentally disengaged, leading to misunderstandings and missed opportunities for connection. This lack of presence stems from what can be described as an “unaware way of being.”

An “unaware way of being” refers to a state where a person is not conscious of their surroundings, actions, or even their own thoughts. This lack of awareness often manifests in several ways:

  • Being lost in thought
  • Failing to register the details of a situation
  • Lack of focus
  • Unintentionally impacting others through unconsidered behavior
  • Resistance to alternative perspectives or feedback

This phenomenon is not only relevant to individual actions but also plays a significant role in how human wiring affects communication. Human wiring refers to the innate tendencies and preferences that shape how individuals create ideas, process thought, and interact with others. When people are unaware of their own wiring or the wiring of those around them, it can lead to misunderstandings, conflict, and inefficiencies—both in personal relationships and in the workplace.

The Workplace Impact of Ineffective Communication

Research reveals that 86% of employees attribute workplace failures to ineffective communication and poor internal communication skills. Many of these issues could be resolved simply by understanding people’s natural communication styles, which are rooted in their human wiring.

Consider the case of Jerry and Patrick, two team members with contrasting wiring elements:

  • Jerry is driven by results and prefers to operate independently. He has a natural tendency to debate ideas and remains steadfast in his own approach, often disregarding input he doesn’t find relevant.
  • Patrick, on the other hand, thrives in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. He values harmony, cooperative interactions, and the open sharing of ideas—not debates.

Without an understanding of their differing communication preferences, tension arises. Jerry might strongly advocate for his ideas, leading Patrick to feel defensive. Over time, Patrick may withhold his ideas entirely, anticipating conflict and misinterpreting Jerry’s debate as a personal attack. This dynamic creates barriers to effective teamwork and stifles innovation.

Building Awareness Through Human Wiring

By fostering awareness of human wiring, Jerry and Patrick can bridge their communication gap and work more effectively together:

  • For Jerry: He learns to actively seek input from others, recognizing that collaboration can strengthen his ideas and improve team cohesion.
  • For Patrick: He gains confidence in asserting his ideas, understanding that Jerry’s debating style is not a personal affront but a reflection of his wiring.

This awareness transforms their interactions, enabling more productive conversations and reducing the friction that once hindered their collaboration.

The Broader Implications

Understanding human wiring doesn’t just improve communication within teams; it fosters empathy, adaptability, and mutual respect contributing to a collaborative company culture. Whether in the workplace, at home, or in social settings, recognizing and honoring these innate preferences can unlock deeper connections and greater effectiveness in all aspects of life.

When we move from an “unaware way of being” to intentional awareness, we create opportunities for growth, improved relationships, and meaningful communication. By embracing the principles of human wiring, we can all become better communicators, collaborators, and leaders.

From Resistance to Buy-In: How ‘Why’ Transforms Organizational Change

November 21, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

As you know, organizational change is necessary for growth, innovation, and sustainability. However, implementing change isn’t simply about deciding what must be done and announcing it to your team.

As a leader, you must go deeper by answering a critical question: Why? Why are you making the change?

Why Understanding “Why” Matters

Human wiring plays a significant role in how individuals respond to change. For people naturally wired toward certainty and information, unexpected changes can provoke resistance, confusion, or even outright refusal. These individuals thrive on understanding the logic and purpose behind actions. When you take the time to explain why change is necessary, you create alignment, clarity, and buy-in.

In my book, Me, Myself, and Why? The Secrets to Navigating Change, I underscore that when you fail to address the “why,” you risk alienating a key segment of your team, leading to poor morale, increased turnover, and ultimately, failed initiatives. Conversely, when you articulate the purpose behind change, you invite collaboration and commitment.

Articulating the Why: Leading with Clarity and Intention

The key to explaining the “why” is to connect it to outcomes that also resonate with the audience. A one-size-fits-all explanation won’t suffice because each team member processes information differently.

In addition to explaining the why, you should:

1. Tailor Your Communication
For analytically wired individuals, use data and logic to support the change.
For relationship-driven team members, focus on the human impact and shared values.

2. Tie the Why to Tangible Outcomes
Highlight the possibilities that the change will lead to—for the organization, the team, and individuals.

3. Repeat and Reinforce the Message
Communicating change is not a one and done. Reinforcement builds certainty. Use multiple channels and formats to ensure clarity.

Examples

Example 1: Implementing New Technology

A manufacturing company wanted to adopt a new project management platform. Initially, the leadership team only announced the what—the new platform—and the how—training schedules. Employees pushed back, questioning why they needed to abandon the familiar tools.
The leadership recalibrated their messaging. They explained why the change was occurring:

• The old system couldn’t scale with company growth.
• The new platform would streamline processes, reduce errors, and save hours of repetitive work.
• By connecting the “why” to benefits for employees—less stress and more efficiency—the leadership turned skeptics into advocates.

Example 2: A Shift in Strategic Direction

A retail chain shifted its focus from brick-and-mortar stores to e-commerce. Employees, particularly those in physical locations, felt threatened and uncertain about their future. The CEO took a transparent approach, hosting town halls to explain the strategy.

Why: Consumer behavior was shifting rapidly toward online shopping, and adapting was necessary to remain competitive.
What it would lead to: Growth opportunities in e-commerce and investments in reskilling employees for digital roles.
This clarity reassured employees and positioned the company as forward-thinking.

The Science of Explaining “Why”

Research supports the effectiveness of explaining the “why” during change. Studies published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior found that when leaders provide a clear rationale for change, employees are more likely to engage positively and exhibit higher levels of trust and motivation.

Final Thoughts on Navigating Change

Navigating change is about more than getting from Point A to Point B; it’s about enrolling others in a way that they are moved and motivated around the change. Leaders who align their strategies with human wiring by focusing on the “why” foster environments where employees feel valued and empowered. When people understand the purpose of change—and see the possibilities of what it leads to—they’re more likely to commit to the journey.

To implement this approach in your own leadership practice, reflect on your audience’s natural wiring, craft a compelling “why,” and ensure it not only aligns with your company values and priorities but that others see something for themselves in their active participation in the change. Because ultimately, the secret to successful change isn’t just explaining the “what” or the “how”—it’s making the “why” resonate.

Designing Meetings for Real Engagement: The Human Wiring Approach

November 14, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Whether you’re presenting to potential clients, leading your team, or engaging with a nonprofit board, as a business leader, you have a wide range of audiences. And each of these groups requires an approach that resonates with them. Your role is to make every meeting effective by engaging participants in ways they naturally connect with and process information.

The Common Misstep in Meetings

Many leaders inadvertently design meetings or deliver training that doesn’t account for the diverse ways people learn or process information. Often, meetings focus more on what the leader wants to convey rather than how participants will best absorb it. But here’s the key: a successful meeting or training is not about you—it’s about your audience. Your job is to captivate and engage participants, making your content resonate, no matter how dry or fascinating the topic might be.

The Power of Human Wiring

Your audience is “hardwired” to learn and engage in specific ways, although many won’t be able to articulate this themselves. Some people learn best through verbalizing, others need to put their thumbprint on things, still others prefer detailed explanations or visual aids. Understanding these styles helps you design meetings that connect with each attendee on a personal level, making your content impactful and actionable.

Applying Human Wiring to Meeting Design

Imagine leading a team that learns best through trial and error. If your presentation is a continuous stream of information without room for hands-on engagement, it’s likely to fall flat. Instead, you should create opportunities for participation, where team members can actively try things out or contribute ideas. This approach is particularly effective for learners who thrive through interaction and feedback.

Becoming a Meeting Master

To be an exceptional meeting leader, start with understanding your own human wiring and expand that awareness to your audience’s. Recognizing and aligning with the way people naturally process information is the foundation of all impactful communication. By doing so, you not only elevate the quality of your meetings but also inspire your audience to take meaningful action.

From Miscommunication to Mastery: A Manager’s Human Wiring Epiphany

October 3, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Jessica had been a manager for over ten years, and she prided herself on her ability to lead teams and drive results. Her department consistently hit their targets, but there was always an underlying frustration gnawing at her—her staff just didn’t seem to “get” her directions. No matter how clear she thought she was, she often found herself dealing with missed deadlines, misinterpretations, and incomplete tasks.

“It’s like I’m speaking another language,” she would tell herself, feeling frustrated after yet another team meeting where her ideas didn’t seem to land.

She believed that the issue was with her staff. If they couldn’t follow simple instructions, maybe they weren’t fit for the job. Jessica grew more and more frustrated. In private conversations, she confided to her peers that perhaps she just had a team that wasn’t cut out for the level of execution she needed. Yet, even as she voiced these concerns, something didn’t sit right.

One day, she attended a leadership development seminar where the speaker introduced a concept that would change everything: Human Wiring as a Leadership Superpower. The speaker explained that every person is wired differently in how they process information, make decisions, and take action. Jessica sat forward in her seat as she realized this was about more than just communication styles—it was about recognizing and adapting to the inherent differences in how people are wired to function.

The light bulb went off.

It wasn’t that her staff didn’t understand her directions; it was that she hadn’t been speaking to them in a way that resonated with their individual wiring. Some team members were more methodical and needed step-by-step details to feel confident about a task, while others thrived on big-picture thinking and could feel stifled by too many instructions. Some of her employees needed more details, while others were action-oriented and craved a faster pace.

Jessica realized that she had been delivering the same message to everyone, expecting the same results, regardless of their wiring. Her “one-size-fits-all” approach was the problem—not her team.

Excited and slightly humbled, Jessica returned to work with a new mindset. She began observing her staff, learning their natural tendencies, and paying attention to how they responded to different types of instructions. In team meetings, she started tailoring her message. For the members who were more sequential, she provided clear, detailed breakdowns. For the team members who didn’t need a lot of information, she gave them bullet pointed outcomes. For the relational ones, she gave them time to discuss and connect with others before making decisions.

The results were astonishing. Tasks that had once stalled suddenly flowed smoothly. Communication breakdowns decreased, and her team felt more empowered to take ownership of their work. Jessica saw the immediate impact of aligning her leadership with her team’s wiring.

But beyond just productivity, something even more powerful happened: her relationships with her team deepened. They felt seen and valued for who they were, not just for their ability to execute tasks. Jessica’s leadership style evolved from being directive to truly collaborative, and her staff responded with newfound enthusiasm.

Reflecting on her journey, Jessica realized that understanding human wiring had given her the key to unlock her team’s potential. It wasn’t about pushing them harder—it was about meeting them where they were wired to be their best. What started as a leadership frustration had turned into her greatest leadership strength.

Jessica’s story is a testament to the power of understanding human wiring and how it can transform not only productivity but also relationships within a team.
