Pattern Interrupt: How to Productively Disrupt Behaviors Blocking Your Path to Success

August 22, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Today’s business leaders face numerous challenges, many of which stem from interactions with people. In office or service-based environments, engaging with colleagues, clients, and customers can account for 60-80% of daily activities. In some service industries, this number can rise as high as 90%.

These interactions are influenced by a range of factors, one of the most significant being your unique human wiring. This wiring influences your thoughts, actions, and how you engage with others.

Understanding Your Human Wiring

Every individual has a specific wiring pattern that influences how they generate ideas, process thoughts, communicate, thrive in different environments, and make decisions. Understanding this wiring is key to identifying recurring behaviors that might be hindering your progress—especially if you’re in a leadership position or working on scaling a business.

Often, these recurring behaviors are attempts to satisfy your wiring’s natural tendencies. Without awareness, you may find yourself stuck in a loop, repeating actions that don’t lead to the results you want.

A Common Wiring Pattern and Its Challenges

Over the years, we’ve worked with leaders who exhibit a particular wiring combination:

They enjoy creating and implementing their own ideas and are strong advocates for them.
They prefer to think things through and communicate directly—this is what we refer to as the “Internal Thinker.”
They juggle multiple tasks, often becoming impatient and setting unrealistic expectations for themselves or others.
They value information, structure, and doing things the right way.

Leaders with this wiring often struggle with the following:

Self-Critical Mindset

Without awareness, their internal dialogue can be self-limiting or self-sabotaging, often focusing on what isn’t working. They may overanalyze situations, becoming overly critical in an effort to avoid mistakes.

Delegation

Believing that they are the best person for the job, they can become bottlenecks. Their urgency to move on to the next idea often prevents them from adequately training their team, leading to an overflowing plate of responsibilities.

Fear

Fear of failure, making the wrong decision, or not looking like they have all of the answers in front of their team can paralyze their progress.

Procrastination

Procrastination often stems from their wiring. Impatience leads to delays in tasks perceived as time-consuming. As internal thinkers, they may procrastinate on difficult conversations, overanalyzing what to say. They also delay delegation, fearing it won’t be done perfectly or that it’s faster to do it themselves.

Imagine a leader wired for task-oriented work, responsible for nurturing and developing a team. This task-oriented leader must now focus on nurturing elements—like reinforcing training, encouraging idea-sharing, and being patient with mistakes.

How can they excel in this role?

Strategies to Interrupt Patterns and Improve Leadership

Disrupt Your Natural Impulse

Your wiring is a natural impulse, but your response is a choice. Recognizing your tendency to have your hand in or thumbprint on everything allows you to interrupt that pattern.

Pattern Interrupt: Instead of immediately solving a problem for your team, ask them how they would approach the situation. Encourage them to develop solutions, which not only builds their critical thinking skills but also strengthens your leadership capabilities.

If social interactions drain you, take small steps to build relationships.

Pattern Interrupt: Spend a few minutes asking about someone’s weekend or acknowledging an employee’s consistent performance. These small gestures can help foster a more positive team environment.

Retrain Your Brain

If you find yourself stuck in negative thinking, catch yourself in the moment and shift your focus to the outcome.

Pattern Interrupt: Replace thoughts like “nothing ever works out” with affirmations like “opportunities are aligning from expected and unexpected sources right now.” By consistently practicing this, you can train your brain to move away from self-limiting beliefs and open up space for creative, expansive thinking.

Be Responsible for Clear Communication

As an internal thinker, you might believe you’ve communicated something when you haven’t. Fear of being wrong can lead to deflecting responsibility for miscommunication.

Pattern Interrupt: Own your part in any miscommunication. If you missed a key detail, such as a deadline, acknowledge it, correct the mistake, and move forward. Owning clear communication is vital to effective leadership.

The Bottom Line

You may repeat certain behaviors because your wiring is operating in the background without your conscious awareness. The more you understand and create awareness around your natural wiring, the better you’ll be at interrupting patterns that no longer serve you. This will help you achieve your desired outcomes and lead more effectively.

Code Switching and Human Wiring: Nurture vs. Nature

August 8, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Recently, a client emailed me inquiring about code-switching and human wiring. This topic is an example of nurture vs. nature. Understanding the distinction between nurture and nature is crucial for effective leadership.

Code-switching is your adaptive behavior where you modify your speech, behavior, or presentation based on different contexts. It is a clear manifestation of our nurturing environments.

For example, in code-switching, you might use a formal tone during a business call (your “phone voice”) versus a relaxed tone with friends. These adjustments stem from our nurturing environments, influenced by social expectations, cultural norms, and situational demands.

Human wiring refers to the intrinsic traits and tendencies that are part of our nature, present at birth and consistent throughout our lives. Human wiring gets to the root of how we generate ideas, process thought, the specific environments in which we best thrive, and how much information we need for effective decision making. Recognizing and appreciating these differences not only enhances personal and professional growth but also fosters a more inclusive and productive organizational culture.

For example, some individuals based on their innate wiring are naturally comfortable with conflict and debate, while others avoid it. Some generate their best ideas during meetings by verbalizing with others, while others need time to reflect afterward. These inherent traits shape our interactions and preferences.

Leadership Implications:

As a leader, the more self-aware you are about your own human wiring and the impact of that wiring on communicating with others, the more effective you become. Leaders who invest in personal development leverage their strengths and recognize the unique contributions of others. Self-development fosters a more inclusive and productive work environment, moving away from forced assimilation towards valuing individual strengths.

Practical Application:

Companies investing in personal and leadership development will benefit from:

• Enhanced individual performance.
• Greater team collaboration and communication.
• Increased innovation by tapping into diverse strengths.

Understanding the distinction between the nurturing environment, (code-switching) and your nature (human wiring) allows for more effective leadership and a more dynamic workplace, where everyone’s unique abilities are recognized and utilized.

Addressing Employee Disengagement

August 1, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

According to Gallup, 62% of employees worldwide are disengaged often performing at the bare minimum, while 15% are actively disengaged. As a leader, understanding the root cause of this disengagement is crucial.
To get to the root cause, leaders often spend a lot of time and effort into trying to pinpoint the disengagement. A highly effective approach is to understand human wiring. In several minutes just by understanding a group’s human wiring, we can identify specific changes happening within a team.

When leaders embrace human wiring and its impact on systematizing and scaling their companies, they can proactively and quickly enhance employee engagement.

Here’s where understanding human wiring can improve engagement in your organization:

Role Alignment

Whether you’re scaling a business or focusing on creating a best place to work, match an employee’s natural wiring with the position. This alignment enhances performance, as employees are more likely to excel in positions that suit their inherent tendencies. The employer also benefits from knowing how to best manage and motivate that employee. One employer reduced their turnover from 99% to 0 in 3 months simply by aligning the right human wiring pattern with the position pattern.

Adaptive Leadership

Leaders who understand human wiring can communicate and manage diverse teams more effectively. By fostering an environment where all wiring types are valued and utilized effectively, leaders can boost overall team morale and engagement.

For example, when I showed a CEO that her wiring was completely opposite of her team’s, she had a lightbulb moment. She understood that her abstract communication style wasn’t resonating with her literal, detail-oriented team who needed clear sequences of events or tasks. Frustrated and commanding at first, she modified her approach. She began to communicate more light heartedly and also structured her management style to provide the necessary details and sequences. As a result, her team became more energized and engaged, delivering on the goals needed for the company to grow.

Training and Development

Design training programs that cater to different learning styles to ensure all employees can grow and adapt as the business scales. Some individuals learn best through trial and error, while others thrive on repetition. Tailoring your training or onboarding to address all wiring types can make your programs more effective and engaging.

By focusing on human wiring as part of your organizational development strategies, leaders can quickly and effectively address the root causes of disengagement, leading to a consistently motivated and productive workforce.

Embrace Your Magnificent Self: A Journey to Self-Discovery and Empowerment

February 8, 2024 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to lose sight of our authentic selves amidst the noise of responsibilities, expectations, and distractions. We get in the busy-ness of building a business or a career.

Yet, deep within each of us lies a magnificent self waiting to be fully realized and embraced. This journey of tapping into a magnificent self isn’t arrived at by age. It’s not learned in school or through a book. It’s definitely not a one-time event. It is truly a journey.

Recently, I had an opportunity to lead an amazing group of business professionals at different seasons of their life and career at our Wired to Win: Your Path to Passion, Purpose, and Prosperity. Each time I lead this experience, I get to witness our clients:

-Shift from resigned bystander to active change agent
-Being enlivened as they tap into their greatest natural strengths and align it with their work in the world
-Embrace their biggest blind spot without self-judgment
-Powerfully take ownership of their leadership, relationships, life, and career.

They walk out seeing themselves and others through a clearer lens.
They shift relationships that had been previously frustrating to understanding where they contributed to that frustration without making themselves wrong for it.
They see their mastery of human wiring as an access to being an effective leader and contributor to make the world a better place.

Over the years of leading the Wired to Win experience, I noticed that the successful professionals who sustain their results have a number of things in common, including:

1. Embrace Self-Awareness: They take the time for introspection, reflection, and understanding their human wiring, thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behavior. They learn how to manage when their natural wiring isn’t working and how to use a Pattern Interrupt to fulfill on their bigger contribution.

2. Embrace Self-Acceptance: They embrace all aspects of who they are, including their strengths and what’s not working. They intentionally work on what’s not working but let go of self-judgment and foster a sense of inner peace and contentment which then expands to others.

3. Embrace Self-Expression: By understanding their human wiring, they become deeply connected to how they communicate and implement distinctions so that they fully express themselves with confidence and passion. They also learn to align their environment and tap into their natural gifts and talents. By honoring their innate creativity and sharing their work in the world, they inspire others and leave a meaningful impact.

4. Embrace Self-Empowerment: They understand that true magnificence lies in recognizing their own power and taking responsibility for their lives. Instead of playing the role of a victim, they choose to empower themselves by setting goals, taking risks, and overcoming obstacles. By stepping outside of their comfort zones and embracing challenges, they become an active leader in unleashing their full potential to achieve their dreams.

5. Embrace Self-Connection: At the core of our magnificent selves is a deep sense of connection – to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. Cultivating meaningful relationships, practicing empathy and compassion, and fostering a sense of belonging are essential aspects of this journey. By nurturing these connections and understanding what others need in their human wiring, they experience profound joy, fulfillment, and harmony in their lives.

Getting in touch with our magnificent selves is not a destination but a continuous journey of self-discovery, growth, and transformation. It requires courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Yet, the rewards are immeasurable – a life filled with purpose, passion, and authenticity.
