Surrender: A Meaningful Way to Scale

April 7, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

In a conversation with a fellow business owner who leads a recruiting agency, she mentioned that many of her clients are running around in many directions and that if they took time out to focus on their business rather in their business, they would often see the solutions to their most pressing problems.

It reminded me of one of my quotes, “When you stop to take a break, watch as you attract new things into your life. The new thing was just waiting for you to stop long enough to notice.”

If you’ve been on the go-go-go or pushing to force and outcome, I invite you to surrender. I don’t mean give up. An interesting definition of surrender is cease resistance.

Consider that pushing is resisting. Consider if you reflect and surrender, you might just open up a flood gate of opportunities. Others might just step in to assist you. A solution you’ve been asking for shows up.

How to Surrender to Work ON Your Business

Every year in November, I set aside several days to work on my business for the next year. I intentionally identify a word that gives a positive context from which to create. This year the word didn’t come so easily to me. One day, as I sat quiet, the word came to me: strategic. As a result, strategic relationships are showing up.

Ask yourself what might open up for you if you surrendered? (Surrendered to another way your business could look. Surrendered expectations. Surrendered judgment. Surrendered unrealistic expectations.)

Invitation

If inspired to explore a fresh way to look at your company, I invite you to surrender into allowing two days to get a new perspective on your business and life at the Wake Up Profitable Boot Camp for Business Owners on April 21-22, 2022.

There’s nothing better than:

  • Discovering your unique mix of human wiring and how to fully express it
  • Aligning with your company’s Contribution in the World (this is really motivating when you get in touch with it); and
  • Developing new ways to open up opportunities so you create a sustainable business.

Leaders who take this journey and holistic approach are committed to authentically connecting, brainstorming with their brilliance, and expanding their leadership.

Leaders Ask Questions

January 6, 2022 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Much of a professional’s day is spent asking for information, requesting status updates, or questioning for understanding. Questions can do more than measure what someone knows.

Asking questions is a powerful tool for unlocking potential, discovering personal barriers, and uncovering opportunities. For some people, questioning comes easily. Yet, most don’t ask enough questions, ask questions based on assumptions, or fail to pose questions that promote exploration of new possibilities.

When skilled at asking questions, a leader can:

-Open up conversations

-Fuel performance improvement

-Build rapport and trust

-Mitigate business risk by uncovering hidden hazards

Recently, I led a cohort where I asked thought-provoking questions from my book Me, Myself, and Why? The Secrets to Navigating Change.

These questions were posed so attendees could discover for themselves what might be in the way of accomplishing their goals.

One of my clients shared her deep discovery of what held her back from moving forward on her plans. She got to the source of what held her back. She developed a whole new level of freedom around her actions. No amount of prescriptive advice could have tapped into that personal discovery.

When questions are utilized in ways that are focused on the other person, as opposed to forcing an outcome, it’s amazing what new possibilities or breakthroughs develop.

As leaders, imagine what might be created if we asked questions instead of made assumptions. Ask questions, instead of being prescriptive.

Stop Wasting Time Start Getting to the Root of Company Alignment, Productivity, and Performance

August 5, 2021 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Research indicates that company culture is a defining factor in your company’s success or failure. If company culture is unclear, who will determine it? Existing employees and new hires.

New hires often learn what is acceptable or not by observing others in the company. That’s quite a hit-or-miss tactic that can cause a rotating door of new hires eating into your employee engagement and profitability.

When I work with clients, we distinguish their culture not only by defining key cultural alignment factors but also by learning about the team’s natural wiring. It’s critical to the organization’s success to understand the way human wiring influences your company’s culture.

For example, one of our clients has a leadership team that possess two common human wiring elements. Each senior leader has a high degree of autonomy and a high sense of urgency (impatient). With this mix of wiring, they are inclined to push themselves and others for immediate results, often creating unrealistic timeframes.

What impact do you think these common wiring elements had on the organization?

Since their leaders naturally pushed (high urgency) for results, their staff found the greatest rewards came by delivering results quickly. However, rather than departments collaborating, people worked in silos making independent decisions to get results.

This autonomous, results-driven leadership team found themselves operating in less-than-ideal productivity and profitability. There was often rework because decisions were made in silos, quickly, and without inter and intra-departmental collaboration.

My clients quickly realized the influence of their natural wiring in shaping the company culture. Once they raised awareness of their wiring’s influence on the company’s culture, we were able to set up leadership development tools, a cultural framework, and processes to align what they say their values are and demonstrate those values in action.

When you are clear on your key cultural alignment factors along with the impact of your team’s human wiring on the company environment, you get to the root of cultural alignment, team productivity, and company performance.

Invitation

If you’re inspired to:

  • Deeply understand your human wiring so you stay motivated
  • Be highly effective in delivering communication the way the other person wants to receive it, and
  • Understand the influence of your human wiring on your work environment (and proven tools to overcome any circumstance),

Leadership Lesson: Hold Your Judgment

July 29, 2021 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

There’s a story I heard recently about a seven-year-old girl who could not sit still in school. The little girl continually gets up, gets distracted, and doesn’t follow lessons in school. Her teachers scold her, reward her the few times she pays attention, but nothing changes.

When she arrives home, she gets punished from her mother because the school called the mother. Further, her mother is called into the school to meet with the teachers. The teachers think the child has an illness or needs medication.

During the meeting with the mother, child and teachers, an old teacher arrives who knows the little girl. He asks the teachers and mother to follow him into an adjoining room but where the child can still be seen. Before leaving the child in the room, the old teacher turns on the radio leaving the little girl with music playing in the background.

As the old teacher leaves the room, the little girl gets up and moves up and down dancing to the music. The old teacher smiles as the mother and other teachers look at him in confusion. The old teacher then speaks up and says, “See? She is not sick, she is a dancer!”

The old teacher recommends the mother enroll the child in dance class and encourages the other teachers to allow the child to dance during breaks. When the child returns home after her first dance class, she tells her mother, “Everyone is like me!”

Who is this child?

The late Gillian Lynne, an internationally-recognized dancer and choreographer of the musical “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera.” While there are different versions of the story, it’s important to understand what was underneath her behavior.

From a human wiring perspective, I would bet this child was naturally wired lower on the patience scale. She was simply not wired to sit for long periods of time and listen to information all day. It’s draining for her. When she could dance, she was able to tap into that wiring and get it met.

When a client said to me recently that she thought she had Asperger’s all her life because of the communication disconnects with others, I looked at her human wiring report. She had an all-task, very direct communication pattern. With some added tools in how to deliver communication, she was able to better connect and frame her responses so that she could communicate successfully with others.

The Lesson: Hold Your Judgment

Let these stories be a lesson for all leaders: Hold your judgment.  Instead of judging what’s wrong with someone, tap into the natural talents and wiring of a person. Imagine what creative ideas could be born out of understanding their natural wiring.

How Are You Hardwired?

January 28, 2021 by Lisa Mininni Leave a Comment

Did you know that the source of your stress can be related to your innate human wiring? As I mentioned last week, human wiring tells us how people are best engaged in decision making, why some people want lots of information to make an effective decision, and yet others want only the critical points of information.

Yet, most people make the mistake of delivering communication the way they want to receive it. This often leaves room for stressful miscommunication and misunderstandings.

I still remember the time I was sitting with two of my mentoring clients. One client was wired as a fast-paced External Thinker. The other client was wired as a methodical, Internal Thinker. When the client wired as an Internal Thinker asked for help to resolve a business issue, my External Thinker client rapidly asked her question after question. She didn’t get the first question answered before he asked another question.

The interaction reminded me of that 1986 movie, Short Circuit, when the robot was literally short circuiting from too much input. My client wired as an Internal Thinker couldn’t figure out which question to answer first. I intervened asking my fast-paced External Thinker client to slow down a minute. We all started laughing as they began to recognize their wiring in action.

It’s fascinating how much more effective you become when you learn about your own wiring (and learn to spot it in others). If you haven’t experienced our Wired to Win class, now is the time to register for our Wired to Win 101: How Are You Hardwired online class happening, Friday, February 5 from 8:30 am – 1 pm Eastern Time.

You will learn practical ways to spot how others need to receive their communication, identify ways to align your work environment with how you naturally execute, and get deeply connected to why experiences occur stressful to you (and what to do about it).

Better yet, bring your business colleagues, register your team, or your significant other. It’s fun when you have others in your business and life that can reinforce the distinction of human wiring.

REGISTER TODAY. REGISTRATION CLOSES SUNDAY, JANUARY 31, 2021.
